Review: Nutrigenomics two part series presented by Dr Flavia Fayet-Moore APD, PhD
Flavia is an Accredited Practising Dietitian, Sports Nutritionist, Honorary Associate of the University of Sydney and the founder and director of Nutrition Research Australia. Flavia took the very first course in nutrigenomics at the University of Toronto in 2000 and she has seen over 300 clients for nutrigenomic testing in her practice since 2012.
Nutrigenomics part 1: an introduction to this emerging field of nutrition science. Flavia explained how individual genetic variation affects a person's response to nutrients. For example the effect of caffiene consumption on cardiovascular disease depends on a variation in a gene called CYP1A2. Individuals with a variant of CYP1A2 break down caffeine more slowly and are at risk of hypertension and cardiovascular disease when caffiene intake is high (over 200mg a day). This is important information that is not captured in the general rule “up to four cups of coffee each day is fine”.
Nutrigenomics part 2: Applying nutrigenomics in your practice. Flavia presented an extremely practical session on how we can start using the science of nutrigenomics in our practice. She clearly outlined steps in the DNA-based dietary consult

Flavia also gave a nutritional a summary of gene variants including viatmin A, iron, energy balance, lactose, gluten, sugar preference and fat taste perception. She outlined, using two case studies, how this genetic information can help guide the nutritional consultation.
Interestingly, research has shown that when people have been given a genetic explanation as to why they would benefit from changing what they eat, they are more likely to change their behaviour and maintain that change.
