Refeeding syndrome presented by Dr Danielle Bear, PhD, APD
Dr Danni Bear delivers a clinically practical overview of refeeding syndrome, focusing on the new The Australasian Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition: Consensus statements on refeeding syndrome. She explores the pathophysiology, risk identification, prevention, diagnosis, and management of this potentially life-threatening condition. Drawing on her extensive ICU experience, she highlights the limitations of existing evidence, the shift away from overly conservative feeding practices, and the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration. The presentation integrates theoretical knowledge with clinical application with a case study. Danni discusses thiamine supplementation, cautious feeding initiation, electrolyte monitoring, and the need for updated hospital protocols reflecting the latest evidence. This presentation is a very helpful update for dietitians working in hospital, outpatient, and community settings.
