Person-centred care in dietetics presented by Hannah Olufson, APD

A conceptual model for integrating person-centred approaches into nutrition services

Let’s take a moment to consider what matters most to the individuals we care for. This will naturally vary from person to person, which is why responsive systems of care are essential for delivering truly person-centred nutrition care. Drawing from her PhD research in rehabilitation settings, Dr Hannah Olufson (PhD, APD) introduces a conceptual model to guide person-centred nutrition care; and invites us to reflect on how it can be applied in our own practice. She highlights key opportunities for dietitians, including interprofessional collaboration, meaningful consumer engagement, and linking nutrition with the ‘big picture’.

Learn about:

  • Four key concepts of person-centred nutrition care
  • Why flexibility matters –systems, services, and individual practitioners can be adaptive to meet individual care needs.
  • Innovations making a difference – including co-designed video resources and ward-based food service orientations improving patient engagement.

Hannah Olufson is an Accredited Practising Dietitian and early-career researcher affiliated with Metro North Health and the University of Queensland. Hannah completed her PhD research at the University of Queensland in 2024, exploring person-centred dietetics and food services in hospital rehabilitation units—a historically under-researched area. Hannah’s clinical research aims to enhance nutrition and mealtime care in rehabilitation populations through personalised care, consumer engagement and data-driven decision-making. Hannah is also passionate about bridging the gap between contemporary research and clinical services and supporting allied health professionals in translating research into practice.
