Very Low Energy Diet (VLED) Presented by Dr Janet Franklin, PhD, APD

Janet Franklin is a senior clinical dietitian and research coordinator at Metabolism and Obesity Services, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, and a guest lecturer on obesity management at both the University of Sydney and University of Wollongong.

Janet completed her PhD in psychosocial aspects of childhood obesity, but has spent most of her research career looking at adult clinical obesity. Janet founded and chaired for 10 years the DAA State and then National Obesity Interest Group.

Australia’s population is becoming heavier. And while weight itself is not a great predictor of health and well being when someone’s BMI starts nudging 40, it is frequently associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, joint problems and a myriad of other health issues, including, not surprisingly, increased mortality.

In certain situations weight loss is necessary and can be life saving. Very low energy diets provide initial rapid weight loss. But just who is recommended for these diets, how do we manage them and are they any use in the long term?

We were grateful to have Janet explain the finer detail in the use of very low energy diets.
