An update in ICU nutrition Presented by: Varsha Asrani, Senior ICU Dietitian Auckland City Hospital
The last guideline for nutrition in ICU was published nearly 12 years ago in 2006. The new guideline is significantly different, with 57 recommendations on clinical nutrition in the ICU. Varsha explored some of the key recommendations and outlined research which contributed to their formation. Including:
- Who should be considered for medical nutrition therapy in the ICU
- When EN should be commenced
- EN tolerance and interventions
- Caloric expenditure in the ICU
- When to introduce PN
- Protein intake in the ICU
- Macronutrients in PN
- Glutamine and Omega-3 in critical illness
- EN in special conditions
- In the obese patient
- Monitoring in the ICU
Varsha is a Senior ICU dietitian at Auckland City Hospital and a PhD candidate with the Department of Surgery, at the University of Auckland. Varsha’s research in Clinical dietetics includes; enteral and intravenous nutrition, fluids, gut dysfunction and failure, ICU and surgical nutrition. She is the lead for the Clinical Practice Committee for Australasian Society of Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition and Convener of the ICU-NUTRITION special Interest group in NZ
