Rural dietetic practice by Corrina Michael, APD

By Anthea Talliopoulos, APD

Rural dietetics is undeniably a constantly engaging, evolving and very rewarding line of work. While regional work may initially appear as isolating, dietitians working in this sector have capabilities which can transform healthcare settings, making a meaningful impact on not only individuals but also communities through a collaborative approach. In addition to this, technological advancements have made networking, professional development and Telehealth consultations much more feasible for clinicians.

In this interesting presentation, Accredited Practising Dietitian Corrina Michael shares her knowledge, passion and expertise for regional dietetics in an engaging manner. She explains the broad range of opportunities in working rurally, flexibility in work, as well as the transferrable skills obtained, including collaboration, initiative, and professional clinical skill development.

With respect to project implementation, Corrina also discusses the importance of understanding the demographics at hand, with reference to key public health statistics and resources. This includes conducting a thorough needs assessment to ensure that the services delivered are practical and can make a meaningful impact on individual lives in the community. In addition to this, she explains how risk management throughout community projects is crucial, including planning and evaluating the implementation of services, such as through identifying the gaps and barriers in healthcare services, funding, cultural appropriateness, and considering staff turnover.

Corrina concludes by discussing a case study on paediatric feeding services, including how this was practically realigned with community needs and feedback to meet the needs of the parents and children.

Overall, rural dietetics has the capacity for transforming the health of communities, as well as providing unique personal growth for clinicians.
