Insulin resistance - How to manage it. Presented by Susie Burrell, APD

Your client complains of being tired, hungry, craving carbohydrates and an expanding waistline. A common presentation of someone with insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a serious metabolic condition in which baseline insulin is unable to optimally regulate glucose meatabloism. Insulin resistance is a precursor to diabetes, but importantly, can be reversed.

The metabolic changes occuring when someone has insulin resistance are complex and dietitians are well placed to provide dietary advice when someone has it.

The carbohydrate intake of our clients is relevant when we consider their glycaemic control and how impaired insulin will affect blood glucose levels. We also need to be recommending adequate omega 3 polyunsaturated oils which are vital for improving insulin sensitivity at the cell membrane level.

Physical activity is paramount, 75% of whole body glucose utilization occurs in the skeletal muscle. If clients have reduced skeletal muscle their glycaemic control will be poor.
