GORD and Barrett’s oesophagus Presented by: Louise Mudge, APD

Gastro oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is estimated to occur in 10–15% of the Australian population. Many of our clients either present with GORD or have a history of GORD. In her webinar Louise brought us up to date with the management of GORD from lifestyle interventions through to medications and then surgery as a final option. She described the symptoms, diagnosis and physiology of GORD and looked at some of the complications of GORD including Barrett’s oesophagus.

Louise explained the medications used to manage GORD and the hierarchy of their use when symptoms do not respond to lifestyle change. She then gave five scenarios in which surgery is considered for these clients. She described the surgical procedures, illustrating them with slides from the GI clinic where she works. The dietitian’s role in perioperative management of these clients is crucial for the surgery to take place and its success. In addition, the dietitian plays an important role in assisting these clients’ post-surgery with their ongoing health.

Louise Mudge is an APD with more than 20 years of experience both in private practice and as a Senior Dietitian for Digestive Diseases at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. Her main specialties include managing patients with GORD, achalasia, motility disorders, gastric and oesophageal cancer. Currently she is involved in a study investigating the reduction in liver volume over time with the use of preoperative VLCD prior to laparoscopic fundoplication.
