Functional dyspepsia. Presented by Gemma Monaghan, Senior gastroenterology dietitian

Functional dyspepsia (FD) affects around seven percent of people. The signs and symptoms have an overlap with IBS so we may be referred a client for IBS, but on further investigation this client could have functional dyspepsia.

Functional dyspepsia is often caused by an issue with the bidirectional communication between the gut and the brain (with psychological factors often present eg. anxiety). The dysregulated gut-brain connection leads to motility disorders, visceral hypersensitivity and changes in mucosal and immune function.

Gemma explains that management is often three-fold (medical, dietary and psychological). She describes the principles of each of these aspects, emphasising the dietetic role.

Learn about:

  • Explaining the gut-brain axis to your clients
  • Validating your client’s experience and symptoms
  • Reassuring your client that there are a variety of effective treatment options available and that FD has no impact on mortality

Gemma Monaghan is a senior gastroenterology dietitian with extensive experience working across a variety of settings including private practice, academia, corporate health and hospital outpatient clinics. She currently runs the disorders of gut-brain interaction outpatient clinics at the Northern Hospital in Melbourne. Gemma is passionate about providing quality evidence based and practical advice to patients to help them achieve their health and nutrition goals.
