Bulimia nervosa. Presented by Shane Jeffrey, APD
Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder and a severe mental illness. The person with bulimia nervosa often also engages in behaviours to hide the eating, purging or exercise, which means the condition can go undetected and untreated for a long time, with physical health implications. In his webinar Shane describes the incidence and Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM 5) definition of bulimia. Because the client with bulimia may not always be open about their condition, he explains the warning signs which they may exhibit. These include; psychological, physical, nutritional, behavioural and medical changes.
Shane details a range of treatment options which may be implemented. He uses the RAVES model to illustrate the nutritional the management. In the last part of his webinar Shane presents a case study which provides a practical context to the theory in the first part of his presentation.
Shane is an Accredited Practicing Dietitian with 25 years of experience as a dietitian in both the private and public sectors. During this time, he has worked almost exclusively in the field of eating disorders, establishing himself as a recognized leader in the field both nationally and internationally. Shane is the founder and clinical director of two practices covering South East Queensland, River Oak Health and Food Mind Body. These practices are dedicated to the treatment of eating, weight, and body image across the lifespan, with a focus on eating disorders, the non-diet approach to weight management and eating disorders in sports.
