An update on ARFID presented by Copeland Winten, APD, PhD candidate

Copeland uses her clinical experience and PhD research to outline the diagnostic criteria, phenotypes, screening tools, and clinical risks associated with ARFID. The presentation is framed within a weight-neutral, trauma-informed, and neuro-affirming approach, allowing dietitians to recognise ARFID beyond traditional eating disorder presentations.

Copeland describes valuable practical tools including the Nine Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake disorder screen (NIAS) and PARDI-AR-Q

She explains the nutritional assessment and lab investigations needed to identify nutritional deficiencies. The use of language is highlighted, particularly with regard to food preferences. The social impact of ARFID, and the need for interdisciplinary collaboration are also highlighted.

Learn about:

  • How to use and interpret Nine Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake disorder screen and PARDI-AR-Q
  • The physiological basis of ARFID: understanding appetite hormone differences (e.g. ghrelin, PYY, CCK) and their implications on hunger cues.
  • How to reframe food-related language using terms like “preferred foods” instead of “safe/unsafe” to support a trauma-informed, neuroaffirming approach.
