Self-compassion presented by Dr Kiera Buchanan, DPsych (Clin & Health), BPsych (Hons)
To be human is to experience frustrations, losses, make mistakes and fall short of our expectations. But with self-compassion we are able to acknowledge our failings and not berate ourselves and be overly self-critical. Having self-compassion acknowledges that the most important relationship we have is with ourselves.
Compassion focused therapy aims for our clients to develop self-compassion and build their confidence. Kiera uses a three-system model; threat, drive and care-giving which when explained to our clients, can assist them clarify their source of motivation, thoughts and behaviour. By shifting to a care-giving system, self-criticism is reduced and our clients develop motivation to care for themselves in a way that is in their own best interest.
