Review: Type 1 diabetes two part series presented by Dr Carmel Smart, APD, PhD
Dr Carmel Smart, APD, PhD is a paediatric specialist diabetes dietitian at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, Newcastle. She has been a pioneer in the management of type 1 diabetes in children and young people. Carmel's clinical research is internationally regarded and she has written national and international guidelines on the dietary management of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes.
In part 1 Nutritional management of type 1 diabetes in children and young people Carmel looked at which dietary behaviours were important to help meet target HbA1c levels.
In part 2 Meal-time insulin dosing in type 1 diabetes – beyond carb counting Carmel took us to another level of meal-time insulin dosing. Including protein and carbohydrate in insulin dosing is now being used to improve glycaemic control after meals.
Using data from research she has conducted at the John Hunter Hospital, Carmel has been able to examine the impact that fat and protein have on blood glucose levels. The fat and protein component of a meal can have significant effects on blood glucose levels. Carmel translated this into practical information we can use with our clients on how to calculate meal-time insulin dose.
