General guidelines for management (national and international diabetes care guidelines)

Ages and stages – specific considerations at each life stage

About the presenter

Dr Carmel Smart is a paediatric specialist diabetes dietitian at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, Newcastle, and holds a conjoint senior position with the University of Newcastle. In 2016 she was awarded a Clinical Research Fellowship to support translation of her research into clinical practice. Carmel’s major research interests are in the impact of varying amounts of macronutrients on postprandial blood glucose levels and ways to optimise glucose control after meals. She has written national and international guidelines on the dietary management of children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and is asked to speak nationally and internationally on the dietary care of children with type 1 diabetes. Carmel was a past advisory council member of the International Society of Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) and convenor of the ISPAD Science School for Healthcare Professionals.
