Nutrition considerations in shift work. Presented by: Gloria Leung, PhD Candidate
Shift work is work that takes place outside the traditional 9 to 5 workday. It can involve evening or night shifts, early morning shifts, and rotating shifts. Many industries rely heavily on shift work, and millions of people work in jobs that require shift schedules.
Shift work can take a toll on sleep, physical and mental health, performance, and safety. It can often mean not having access to healthy food options during work hours and as Gloria explains in her presentation, when we eat and what we eat does make a difference to our metabolic health.
Gloria provides us with useful strategies to assist us with our clients who work shift work including important factors to consider in our nutritional assessment, general advice, when to eat and what to eat.
Gloria Leung is a PhD candidate from the Department of Nutrition, Dietetics and Food at Monash University. Her thesis examines the effects of meal timing on metabolic health, particularly that of shift workers. Her research aims to generate evidence that can be used to advocate for changes in workplace health policies and also assist dietitians in providing evidence-based recommendations to shift workers.
