Diverticulitis presented by Gemma Monaghan, Senior Gastroenterology and Musculoskeletal APD
Gemma explains the difference between diverticulosis vs diverticulitis and walks through dietetic care of diverticulitis using the ADIME framework.
Using the most current evidence base (new guidelines are being worked on currently), Gemma describes the acute management of diverticulitis. Management needs to be individualised (routine antibiotics and a low fibre diet for uncomplicated cases are no longer default) and she describes how to individualise advice across acute and recovery phases.
Using ADIME provides a thorough approach for managing clients with diverticula and when it flares to diverticular disease.
Learn about:
- Individualisation of the acute phase: low-fibre intake only if symptomatic; prioritise hydration, energy/protein (ONS as needed), and watch for red flags (obstruction, fever, sepsis).
- Managing the recovery phase: stepwise return to ~25–30 g/day fibre; no routine avoidance of nuts, seeds, corn, or popcorn.
- Prevention of recurrence: addressing modifiable risks (low fibre, inactivity, high red meat/alcohol, excess weight, smoking, vitamin D).
