Diet and Fibromyalgia, Kaitlyn Anderson, APD

Fibromyalgia affects around 2- 5 % of the population in developed countries, with diet often overlooked as a treatment.   However, dietitians can have a huge impact on people’s lives, beyond just managing and reducing symptoms.

Kaitlyn developed a special interest in Fibromyalgia after her own experience with similar health challenges.  She explains how nutrition therapy can be extremely effective in the management of Fibromyalgia:

What is it, who does it affect (more common in women!)

Symptoms - many and varied, including pain, fatigue, IBS type symptoms, cognitive difficulties, insomnia, muscle spasms

Investigations and Diagnosis - commonly undiagnosed/misdiagnosed

Treatments: Pharmaceutical

Lifestyle - yoga, meditation, Epsom salt baths, massage, sleep hygiene, aromatherapy

Dietary Management - Food Intolerances, gluten free, vegan diets?  Effectiveness of reduced glutamate and aspartame diets, elimination diets and challenges

Key Nutrients and supplements - B vitamins, (particularly B6), magnesium, zinc, Vit D, Omega 3s

Resources

Kaitlyn consults across SE Melbourne through her practise Bite In2 Life.  Her philosophy is to use evidence based, integrative and non-weight centric approaches to address mechanisms of disease and help people develop a lifelong love affair with real food.
