Menopause Presented by Dr Fiona Jane MBBS

Many women experience symptoms of menopause, such as hot flushes, insomnia and anxiety, which cause them to seek medical advice. When they do, it is an opportune time to recommend lifestyle changes that not only ease the symptoms of menopause, but help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis and dementia in older age.

Fiona outlines the physiology and clinical consequences of menopause, most of the symptoms relate to reduced oestrogen levels. She describes the management options for menopause and as well as explaining conventional medical treatments includes detail on commonly used complementary therapies. Her presentation also focuses on the important role of nutrition and the dietitian for women seeking health advice around menopause.

Dr Jane is a specialist women’s health GP with over 35 years’ experience in Australia and America. She consults at Jean Hailes Centre for Women in East Melbourne and Clayton and is a Research Fellow in the Women’s Health Research Program at Monash University. Her studies involve evaluating the health care needs of women of all ages, with particular expertise in hormone action, deficiency and therapy.
