Medication options for type 2 diabetes Presented by Clinical Associate Professor Mark Kennedy
Two hundred and eighty people develop type 2 diabetes every day in Australia and many are referred to see us for diet and lifestyle advice. Although we do not prescribe diabetes medications, it is important that we understand the choices available particularly with regard to the potential side effects of these medications.
The medications used to manage type 2 diabetes are continuously evolving and the options are increasing.
Mark explained, in any one client there is no one right answer, there are often two or three medications that would work equally well. Management now involves considering the individual, their HbA1c target and their coexisting conditions and health. Surprisingly, instead of making diabetes management more difficult, the number of medications now available are actually making management easier, providing flexibility and potentially better health outcomes.
Mark Kennedy is a general practitioner, founding Chair of the Primary Care Diabetes Society of Australia and an Honorary Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of General Practice at the University of Melbourne
