Emerging Adulthood (18-25yrs) and Health by Dr Lee Ashton PhD, MSc, BSc

Emerging adulthood is the period from the late teens through the twenties, with a focus on ages 18 to 25 years. It is a period with significant instability and life transitions (for example, beginning to live independantly, changing relationships, work, study and financial situations). Lee describes how at this time health behaviours can often change in a negative way. When working with adults in this age group it is important to consider what motivates them and what presents barriers for them. Lee explains their key motivators and barriers and by understanding these we are more likely to have a useful therapeutic relationship.

Lee is a Postdoctoral researcher in the Priority Research Centre for Physical Activity & Nutrition at the University of Newcastle. He has a Bachelor of Science in Sport and Exercise Science, and a Masters degree in Nutritional Epidemiology.

His research focuses on reducing chronic disease risk factors using evidence-based interventions to optimise eating habits, activity levels, mental health, and body weight in emerging adults, then the translation of this evidence into practice.
