Nutrition in people with advanced dementia. Part 1

14 Apr, 2023

Nutritional assessment

The presentation covers nutritional assessment in a person with dementia using a clinical scenario:

Paula, an 85yo female with moderate-advanced dementia, is referred to you for a 3kg weight loss in 1/12; her weight is now 55kg with a BMI of 20.2kg/m2. She had been losing 1kg each month for 4/12 prior. She has a history of type 2 diabetes with stable blood sugars and Stage 2 CKD. Paula has started to become aggressive towards her carers when showering and toileting, however you find out she is more likely to accept help when her daughter is visiting. She has also started to become jittery and distracted at the dining table and will sometimes wander away from her meal. The RN reports Paula is currently having soft textured meals, thin fluids and no nutrition supplementation.
