People with dementia and their caregivers identified six main areas of advice/support as important: 

  1. Food type personalisation
    • Texture modification
    • Finger foods
    • Adding extra flavour
  2. Meal choice
    • Letting someone eat how often, how much, with company…
  3. Meal presentation
  4. Eating environment
    • Where are they eating? Lighting? Crockery, table settings
    • Noise, distractions, temperature
    • Chance to mimic other people’s behaviour
  5. Eating assistance
    • Food fortification
    • The role of nutritional supplements
  6. End of life nutrition
    • Having realistic expectations
    • The role of enteral feeding…should it be commenced? Once commenced, can it be stopped?

Communication tips

  • Talking with families
  • Educating/advising staff at the aged care facility- catering staff, nurses, personal care attendants
  • Patient notes and communicating with other health care professionals

About the Presenter

Isabelle Goodwin, APD currently works in the Tasmanian community as a residential aged care dietitian and also in private practice. With a strong interest in mental health and associated conditions, Isabelle completed further research into nutrition in dementia care in 2020 and published this research in 2022. Isabelle is also a credentialed eating disorder clinician (CEDC) and supports undergraduate health students at The University of Tasmania through tutoring and marking.
