Therapeutic carbohydrate reduction presented by Professor Caryn Zinn

Caryn gives an update on therapeutic carbohydrate reduction (TCR), highlighting its evolution from a controversial “low-carb” approach to a recognised, evidence-based strategy for metabolic health. She explains the expanding body of research, demonstrating strong evidence for TCR in conditions such as type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, metabolic syndrome, and MASLD, with emerging applications in neurological and mental health conditions.

She describes the effective community diabetes model of care she has been involved with which incorporates whole foods, behaviour change, and community support. TCR is now considered a practical, flexible, and increasingly accepted tool for addressing insulin resistance and chronic disease.

Learn about:

  • TCR is now evidence-based, not fringe
    • Strong evidence supports its use in type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome, with expanding research into other chronic diseases.
  • Prediabetes is a critical intervention window
    • Early dietary intervention can prevent progression and is easier to reverse than established diabetes.
  • Behaviour change drives success
    • Health coaching, family involvement, and community-based approaches are essential for long-term outcomes.
