Malnutrition in the community presented by Professor Carol Wham
Malnutrition in older adults living in the community is common, under-recognised, and clinically significant—yet often highly modifiable. Carol Wham provides a clear, structured overview of identifying and managing malnutrition risk in older adults using the ADIME framework. The session covers validated screening tools suitable for community practice, including the MNA-SF, MUST, MST, PG-SGA and SCREEN, as well as GLIM diagnostic criteria and the particular considerations required when assessing older adults, including revised BMI interpretation. Carol emphasises the complex interplay between physiological, psychological and social contributors to malnutrition, particularly social isolation, depression, oral health issues, and functional decline. Practical intervention strategies are explored, including food-first approaches, oral nutrition supplements, counselling strategies, service supports, and monitoring outcomes.
