Iron Homeostasis presented by Dr David Frazer PhD

Regulation of body iron levels, clinical markers and best practice treatments for disorders of iron homeostasis

Dr David Frazer provides a comprehensive update of iron homeostasis, from dietary absorption to blood markers, and evidence-based approaches for diagnosing and treating iron deficiency. He covers the molecular mechanisms of iron absorption, current diagnostic criteria (including ferritin cut-offs with and without inflammation), oral supplement recommendations, and special population considerations including pregnancy and bariatric surgery patients.

Learn about:

  • Which three pathology markers you need to make an assessment of iron status
  • First line and follow up treatment approaches for iron deficiency
  • The best time of day to take an iron supplement and why

Associate Professor David Frazer is Head of the Molecular Nutrition Laboratory at QIMR Berghofer. He obtained his PhD in 2003 from the University of Queensland and has devoted his career to understanding the role of iron in health and disease. During this time, he has made major contributions to the study of intestinal iron absorption and the regulation of body iron metabolism, particularly with respect to the use of iron supplements to treat iron deficiency. He has also provided advice to the Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration on the use of oral iron supplements and is a member of the steering committee to establish guidelines for the diagnosis and management of iron deficiency in the Asia-Pacific region.
