Fundamentals of nutrition and cancer. Part 1: Jenelle Loeliger, AdvAPD

Every week the dietitians at Peter MacCallum hospital in Melbourne receive queries from dietitians Australia-wide asking about managing oncology clients.

Their two part series on Fundamentals of nutrition and cancer are designed in response to the common queries we have about nutrition and cancer.

The focus of Part 1 is delivering an effective oncology service. In this webinar Jenelle explains the fundamental characteristics of managing an effective dietetic oncology service.

1. Understand your role and service

  • Know your service (patient casemix, tumour stream profile, treatments, outcomes)
  • Plan your service. Allocate resources based on patient needs in each area and your designed pathways/MOC
  • Use nutrition care pathways to translate best evidence into practice
  • Be proactive rather than reactive

2. Cover all pillars

  • Governance & Quality Improvement. Embed a system-approach program of continuous monitoring, improvement and appropriate risk management
  • Training & Education. Ensure members of the dietetic department are all involved in continuous education. This promotes translation of evidenced based practice and ultimately good patient care.
  • Research. Including research in your department utilises dietetic skills more broadly. It underpins evidenced based practice & influences nutrition care provided

3. Learn from YOUR service and others

  • Continuous improvement
  • Work together with colleagues
  • Be creative!

Evaluate, adapt, and redefine your service over time…
