Challenging type 2 diabetes presentations presented by Dr Robyn Barnes, PhD, APD, CDE
Robyn explores how dietitians can tailor nutrition care for people with type 2 diabetes who present with added medical, psychological, or social complexity. Beginning with a clear evidence-based refresher on the impact of medical nutrition therapy, Robyn highlights how personalised dietary patterns—whether lower carbohydrate, Mediterranean-style, or energy-restricted—can meaningfully improve HbA1c and overall cardiometabolic risk. Through three detailed case studies, she demonstrates the nuanced decision-making required when diabetes coexists with chronic kidney disease, binge-eating disorder, or diagnostic uncertainty such as LADA initially mistaken for type 2 diabetes.
The presentation emphasises the central role of thorough assessment, culturally appropriate communication, and flexible, realistic dietary advice. Robyn also stresses the importance of acknowledging psychosocial barriers, building rapport, and integrating care with psychology, medical specialists, diabetes educators and other MDT members.
