About the Presenter:

Clare Collins is a Professor of Nutrition and Dietetics in the School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Health and Medicine at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. Professor Collins holds a prestigious NHMRC Senior Research Fellowship. She is currently Director of Research for the School of Health Sciences in the Faculty of Health and Medicine and is Deputy Director of the Priority Research Centre for Physical Activity and Nutrition, The University of Newcastle.

As the most successful research dietitian in Australia, she has been awarded over $21 million dollars in research grants, has published over 300 manuscripts and supervised 28 Research Higher Degree candidates to completion.

In 2017 Professor Collins was awarded Hunter Medical Research Institute, Researcher of the Year. Her research is conducted in collaboration with the Hunter Medical Research Institute's (HMRI) Cardiovascular Program. HMRI is a partnership between the University, the Hunter New England Local Health District and the community.

Her innovative creates new technologies to evaluate nutrition and dietary intake, and how improving nutrition, diet quality, food patterns can facilitate improved weight and health across all ages and stages of life and for those with chronic health conditions.

Professor Collins has developed technology based tools for dietary assessment and nutrition education, including the Healthy Eating Quiz, the Australian Eating Survey and the Massive Open Online Course, the Science of Weight Loss – Dispelling Diet Myths.

Professor Collins is a Fellow of the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA). She chaired the development of the Best Practice Dietetic Guidelines for the Management of Overweight and Obesity for Adults. In 2009-2010 she was a team leader of the extensive evidence review to inform the revision of the 2013 NHMRC Australian Dietary Guidelines. In 2016 she led the dietetic team at the University of Newcastle in reviewing the evidence on dietary patterns and heart health for the Sax Institute and Heart Foundation of Australia.

Professor Collins is a well-known and highly sort after nutrition media commentator, having conducted thousands of media interviews for radio and print, appeared on morning news programs including Sunrise and since 1990 written hundreds of nutrition articles for the public. She is a regular guest of Dr Karl on ABC and BBC science, TripleJ Science Hour and podcasts for Shirtloads of Science. In 2018 she has been a presenter for Catalyst and appeared on Ask The Doctor. Professor Collins has co-authored six books for the public on nutrition and written over 70 articles for The Conversation.
