Nutrition for people with acute kidney injury in hospital

17 Feb, 2023

Best practice update

The European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) released a guideline on clinical nutrition in hospitalised patients with acute or chronic kidney disease in 2021.

In this conversation style best practice update, Anthony Meade answers the following questions regarding the 2021 ESPEN guideline and how the recommendations can be put into perspective and into practice:

  • What is the difference between AKI and CKD?
  • What are the key clinical features to look for and monitor when assessing AKI?
  • What are the differences between AKI in the ICU vs ward setting?
  • Where and when do the AKI nutrition guidelines really apply?
  • How do we determine energy and protein requirements in AKI?
  • Does it matter what malnutrition screening tool you use?
  • Does body muscle mass or weight make a difference?
  • Nutrition supplementation in AKI - what are the options?
  • Nutrition care for AKI and CKD in the ICU - how is it different?
