About the Presenter
Melanie Frodsham, BPharm (Hons) MPS AACPA
Melanie is an accredited consultant pharmacist based in Western Melbourne. She currently works part-time in community pharmacy while also acting as a private consultant pharmacist visiting patients in their homes (where referred by a GP for a 'Home Medication Review'). Melanie focuses on elevated cholesterol as a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease (one of nine National Health Priority Areas). The Australian Bureau of Statistics has identified ischaemic heart disease as the leading cause of death in 2015 for males and females. Pharmacists such as Melanie are well placed to identify people at risk, with four ways they can promote cardiovascular well-being and healthy cholesterol levels in the community: (1) educate customers on lifestyle changes and strategies to reduce cholesterol (2) supply information about lipid-lowering medicines, (3) encourage medicine adherence, and (4) provide a cholesterol-testing service in the pharmacy.
Melanie is author of Pharmacy and Cholesterol Testing, published in the Australian Pharmacist, July 2017 issue.
