About the Presenter
Dr Lee Ashton PhD, MSc, BSc
Lee Ashton is a Postdoctoral researcher in the Priority Research Centre for Physical Activity & Nutrition (University of Newcastle). Prior to that, he completed his MSc in Nutritional Epidemiology at the University of Leeds (UK) and a BSc (Hons) in Sport and Exercise Science at Leeds Beckett University (UK). Originally hailing from Manchester in England, Lee has amassed extensive cross-cultural and interdisciplinary experience across the UK and Australia. He was awarded his PhD from the University of Newcastle in 2017.
His research focuses on reducing chronic disease risk factors using evidence-based interventions to optimise eating habits, activity levels, mental health, and body weight in emerging adults (aged 18-25 years), then translation of this evidence into practice.
Since completing his PhD, Lee’s research trajectory has escalated with 14 publications to date, and his work has been recognised with eight awards for researcher excellence.
Dr Ashton is committed to effective communication in science and does regular media interviews on nutrition, young adult health, and the use of technology. He also writes regular articles for the academic website, The Conversation, with his last three articles engaging over 880,000 readers.
